Yesterday we had a second meeting with Arrebita team, via Skype . The purpose of this meeting was to reach some conclusions with regard to constructive solutions, to proceed to the next phase: contact with materials suppliers and establish the necessary partnerships.

Unidade modular, também conhecida por "Caba" (maquete da equipa) / Modular unity, aka "Caba" (model made by the team)

José Paixão (coordenador do projeto).

After the contributions of all partners and many work sessions, the team has already taken some decisions with respect to the project. The windows of the main facade is an example of that planning work that has been developed: the team decided to replace the existing windows, trying to keep the look of the original windows.

Much of the talk focused on constructive solutions adopted for the interior lining of the modular units (which will include kitchen, toilets, laundry and storage areas). The team decided to coat the "box" with polycarbonate, a material that has been proposed by DIMSCALE, after a conversation with architect José Paixão (project coordinator). This is an option that brings value at the conceptual level and that meets a set of technical requirements. It was also discussed technical aspects like the dimensions of the plates, the grooves, cutting and possible areas of connections with the structure of the box.

We discussed the rest of the building system of the "box", having been reached at the following schema: a wooden structure, lined in Viroc, acoustic / thermal cork panels and polycarbonate outer coating. Between the cork insulation and the outer cating, besides the structure, will be applied LED tapes.

It was also addressed issues relating to sound insulation between floors, skylights application with integrated ventilation systems, use of wood in floors, stairs, beams and doors, stairs and mezzanine guards, application of stainless steel sanitary and relating to steel structure to be installed in the floor of the ground floor. For some of these aspects, the partners Magnetic Fields and NCREP will give important inputs that will help to make the most appropriate decisions.

In order to solve the problem of natural light in the basement, the team decided to create an open area between the ground floor and the basement, in the area of the building's main entrance. Thus, access is done through a box with a "bridge", for which DIMSCALE suggested the material Valchromat.

The next Open Working Day will be next week, Wednesday 30th, once again in Porto. To this day DIMSCALE has prepared a workshop in which the team will make the measurements (in AutoCad) of the modular unit, so they can have direct contact with our work and seize their relevance to the projects success.

Vemo-nos na próxima semana!

Segundo Open Working Day

DIMSCALE was yesterday in Porto for another Open Working Day at project Arrebita!Porto. These are events open to the public that are intended to disclose all the work done in the project and enhance the discussion about it. On this second day of the event (the first happened on April 18th), besides the work team, there were interventions of the partners NCREP and Magnetic Fields, respectively on the issues related to the structure and energetic efficiency of the building. DIMSCALE intervened in last place, to talk about the cost implications of all work submitted by either team, or by partners.

Segundo Open Working Day

Were addressed, on DIMSCALE intervention, what were the cost implications related to the material choices and configurations of modular units to be installed on different floors, and was even proposed a new organization of space within the "Living Box". This proposal provides for an organization "by slices" of different sections (kitchen/eating area, toilets, storage and laundry), in order to reduce production costs and optimize applications of materials.

We also discussed some more solutions at the level of materiality for these units, particularly in terms of finishes, and floor structure. Concerning of the building itself, was again discussed the possibility of using glass walls and floors in order to facilitate the movement of natural light. This is a good solution, since, despite being relatively expensive, turns out to be profitable because it is applied to small areas and for the value it brings to the program at the functional  and conceptual levels.

As for windows, DIMSCALE warned again the team to the costs of preserving the original windows. This decision will involve, besides repairing windows, installing interior windows, to be able to fulfill the thermal regulations. These facilities can request the wall reinforcement, since this has a thickness of only 10 cm, which precludes the installation of second windows. We also discussed issues related to thermal and acoustic insulation between floors and the replacement of some tiles on the roof. Concerning NCREP intervention, DIMSCALE will wait for its technical proposal for strengthening the structures, so it can be studied in the
cost control perspective. It was also agreed to proceed this way in relation to the energy efficiency proposal by partner Magnetic Fields.

During the afternoon, DIMSCALE gave a workshop about Quantity Surveying and Cost Control to Arrebita team, at Escola das Virtudes. The Workshop is available for download here. Before the workshop it was again discussed with the team the best setting for the "Living Box". Following the ideas discussed, the team will now present a proposal for the unit design.
